And so it begins......! The new season is upon us and what a start we had.
The Western Province Motorcycle Section, now headed up by David Bolding, once again pulled off a successful All Bike Race Day, moved from its normal 16th December timeslot to January. It was the first event of the year and an exciting season will culminate in the 2012 ABRD back in its December slot this year.
A perfect day to show off some new machinery, test your skills as a rider and get a general feel for what racing is all about.
The breakfast run class was packed with talented riders all looking very good on bikes of various sizes, manufacturers and year models. Most of them coming through from the Riding school that the section runs once a month.
We welcome Mike Hopkins Motorcycles on board as our official sponsor for the year, we wish them great success and thank them for their support. Should you need anything you can contact them on 021 4615167.
Congratulations to the winners from last year and especially to David “McFlash” McFadden who was crowned the SA Supersport Champion. Malcolm Rapson is going to have a tough time defending his title as WP Regional Champion. It looks like the BMW’s and the Kawasaki ZX10’s will be the bike to beat this year with the likes of Trevor “Killer” Westman and Ronald “The Red Baron” Slamet but watch out for Aran “Vantastic” van Niekerk.
Chris Williams took the B class title and has since broken out into class A so the title is up for grabs.
Terry Smith won class C and has also broken out into Class B
Vossie Vosloo took the D Class title and moved into Class C as he gained his confidence.
Hayden Jonas’s runaway victory in Powersport will also be a tough defend as he moves to a 400cc and the competition gets better.
Chris Leatt’s 2 point margin in BOTTS showed how tight the racing was throughout the year and should be this year again.
Ronald Slamet opens the door in the 600cc class as he moves onto a 1000cc Beemer. Watch out for young Nicholas van der Walt with the history of racing in the family.
Tony Sparg will fight off the experienced “oldies” gang as they search for parts and a little bit more speed in the Vintage Superbikes.
Tony Jones took the SATT title and is always a force to be reckoned with.
Hats off to the condition of these superb machines and the way the riders handle them.
The riders and spectators alike have been waiting patiently for the season opener and good luck to all involved.
